The pomegranate was the fruit in Greek Mythology that condemned Persephone to spend four months, one month for each seed she ate, in the underworld with Hades every year. Her mother, Demeter, was goddess of the harvest. Her distress causes plants to die during these months in the winter, but grow again after her daughters return in the spring. The fruit is symbolic of life, fertility and abundance.
